Savvy Nature AAMI Derby Day 2013

The AAMI Victoria Derby Day is almost upon as, and all of the attention will be on Flemington Racecourse in anticipation for the only race meeting in Australia in which every race has group status. Although a lot of the attention will be on the $1.5 Victoria Derby, the rest of the schedule is equally impressive, without even considering the fact that two races take on extra importance as they give its winners exemption from the ballot for the Melbourne Cup taking place next Tuesday, the Mackinnon Stakes and the Lexus Stakes.

However, race 6 on the schedule will garner most of the interest, not only for the prestige associated to the event, but also for the cracking field that will be lining up for the race this year. The sixteen-strong field is packed with winners, and it will be difficult to pick a winner from this talented pack. The barrier draw on Wednesday threw in some surprises, shaking up the betting markets, and guaranteeing a chance to certain runners who were frankly in need of some assistance from the draw.

There was some good draw news, which was backed among punters, for Savvy Nature. The winner of the Group 2 Mitchelton Wines Vase at last Moonee Valley last weekend, Savvy Nature drew barrier 13 and is now $4.80 favourite to claim the feature event of the day. The John O’Shea-trained horse would become the 15th horse to complete the Mitchelton Wines Vase-Victoria Derby in the last thirty years. Seemingly out wide in barrier 13, Savvy Nature will be bumped to gate 11 should the two emergencies for the race fail to get a run.

In any event, O’Shea does not see the wide berths as a problem, as many of the leading contenders for the race have been drawn wide. ‘It is very interesting with the favourites in 13, 14 and 16,’ O’Shea said. ‘We have to think about it and see where we will end up in the run. I think there is a long tail to this race so I would not want to be getting too far back.’

Drawn one barrier wider in number 14, betting markets have reacted differently to former race favourite Complacent($5.50). Peter Snowden’s Complacent was last seen winning the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes over 2000 metres at Randwick earlier this month, from which three out of the last four Victoria Derby winners have come.

Snowden’s other horses in the running for the race on Saturday, San Diego ($7.00) and Tupac Amaru ($16.00), drew barriers six and eight respectively.
