Srikandi wins the 2015 Stradbroke Handicap

The last of the million dollar plus race of the season, the $2 million Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) proved to be a major upset as the Ciaron Maher trained $12 rated Srikandi, defied all odds to emerge victorious in the showpiece race of the Brisbane Winter Festival. The 4YO mare showed sufficient composure under winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy, who guided the speedy mare to the lead in the final 200m after which she zoomed to victory.

Maher had only words of appreciation for the winning duo. “It was a great effort by the team to get her back up,” Maher said. “It hasn’t gone really smoothly this preparation,” he added.
“We really targeted this carnival and it’s just a great carnival.”
“The aim was to peak her today and fortunately it’s come on.”
“It’s one of Australia’s best sprint races and to win it with this mare it’s just such a thrill.”

Winning hoop Kerrin McEvoy too appreciated the performance of the winning mare. “She had a dream run and travelled really well,” McEvoy said. “The ground’s just been breaking up all day and I reckon it actually suited her, just a little bit on the soft side,” he added.
“I’m very lucky to be here today. Obviously the weights didn’t go up and (Damian) Brownie and the boys couldn’t do the weight.”
“Really honoured and thrilled to win the biggest race in Queensland – the Stradbroke.”

The Chris Waller trained Boban finished second in the race 1-3/4 lengths behind the winner, while the John O’Shea trained Generalife finished a long head further. Joint pre-race favourites Lumosty and Charlie Boy finished in the disappointing 10th and 14th positions.
