The Chris Waller trained filly Winx wins the Queensland Oaks

The pre-race favourite Winx gave her opponents absolutely no chance as the filly powered her way to a dominant victory in Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Casino & Hotel Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben. The filly provided trainer Chris Waller with his 13th Group I victory of the season. It was after the turn that jockey Hugh Bowman took the wide route after which Winx zoomed to victory in an unstoppable manner.

Waller later had only words of praise for the filly. “The pressure is on when you’ve got a favourite in a big race,” Waller said. “She’s got class and a turn of foot,” he added. “To have that extra gear or two makes a big difference.”
“Good horses makes things look easy. She was dominant.”

Bowman later remarked that he really didn’t have to make much effort for the victory. “I got her into her rhythm,” Bowman said. “She was comfortable, therefore I was comfortable,” he added.
“She didn’t feel like she was going to let down like that. She’s done it with authority.”

The Robert Smerdon trained Ungrateful Ellen finished second, 3-1/2 lengths behind the winner, while the Peter Moody trained Imperial Lass finished third a further 1/2 lengths behind.
