Magicool wins the Queensland Derby

The Mark Kavanagh trained Magicool produced a surprising performance towards the end of the race to emerge victorious in Saturday’s $600,000 Group 1 Channel Seven Queensland Derby (2200m) at Doomben. In a neck and neck contest with the $2.30 pre-race favourite Werther, Magicool proved to be the slightly faster gelding, with a difference of 3/4 lengths.

Kavanagh expressed his satisfaction with the winner after the race. “It’s always hard to win a Group 1 and the boys have been patient so today’s the day,” Kavanagh said. “He’s still been maturing all the way through mentally and I think last week against the older horses was his best performance,” he added.
“He’s going to go for a rest now but we’ll be back to look towards the spring.”

Winning jockey James Winks too looked satisfied with the winner. “I got a fair way back but they went really solid early,” Winks said post victory. “I had three-deep cover most of the way and full credit to the horse when I asked him he was there for me,” he added.
“Credit to Mark, he’s got him rock hard fit, we spoke this morning and we were both quietly confident.”
“I can’t thank him enough for the opportunity.”

The Michael Nolan trained Jumbo Prince finished third, while the Chris Waller trained Sadler’s Lake finished fourth.
