Press Statement wins the 2015 JJ Atkins

An immensely successful 12 months for trainer Chris Waller continued as Press Statement delivered him the 14th Group I victory of the season, winning Saturday’s $600,000 Group I JJ Atkins (1600m) at Doomben. However, Press Statement had to fight all the way till the end, guided by veteran jockey Tye Angland to win the race. Starting at $6.50

Waller later had only words of appreciation for the winner. “The way he won at Canterbury, you could see he was a special horse,” Waller said post-victory.
“He did everything so professionally at Canterbury where a lot of young horses find it difficult,” he added.
“To then get on a truck (after only racing last Saturday), come up here (to Brisbane), racing in Group 1 company it takes a pretty special horse and only special horses can do it and he’s one of them.”

Angland called the winner a superstar. “He’s got great speed and I was lucky enough to be able to slot in behind Counterattack,” Angland said after the race. “He gave me a good drag into the straight and when he let down he stretched out really well,” he added.
“He’s a little superstar.”

The Toby Edmonds trained Sagaronne finished second, 3/4 lengths behind the winner, while the Clarry Conners trained Look To The Stars finished 1-1/4 lengths further. Pre-race $4.40 favourite Bassett could only manage a fifth place finish.
