Damien Oliver could clinch the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership on Sunday

Jockey Damien Oliver seems to be inching towards victory in the Melbourne Jockeys’ Premiership, with a two-win gap between him and his nearest rival Craig Williams. With only six races left at Geelong on Sunday, Oliver’s march towards a 10th title got an extra boost with a victory aboard Volcanic Ash at Caulfield on Saturday. His contention for the title was further boosted by William’s winless performance at the meet.

Williams, however, could be termed unlucky on Saturday as he finished second in three races in the Caulfield meet.

Oliver later expressed his relief with the lead. “We both had some nice rides today but we probably didn’t ride as many winners as we kind of thought we might have,” Oliver said.
“But you’ve got to be happy going into the final day with a lead,” he added.
“I’m hopeful but never too confident in this game.”
“If you looked at our rides today you would have swore that we would have probably ridden more winners than we did.”
“It just goes to show, you can have a lot of the good rides and not always get the winners.”
