2014 Derby Preview: Hampton Court Starting As The Punters’ Favorite

AAMI Victoria Derby 2014

The Gai Waterhouse trained Hampton Court has emerged as the Punters’ clear favorite heading into Saturdays’ $1.5M Group 1 AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington. Ladbrokes has put the horse at $2.40, making it the clear favorite in the 17 horse race.

Trainer Waterhouse seemed confident about the horse’s abilities to win the Derby and compared it with her Melbourne Cup winning horse, Fiorente. “You just know you have the right horse; I thought that about Fiorente before the Cup and I think the same about Hampton Court going into the Derby,” Waterhouse said.
“I am confident and comfortable; I think he will win easily,” she added.
“I just think my bloke is the dominant horse.”
“Having Hampton Court in the Derby is like having Fiorente in the Cup last year. I knew I had the best horse. He was dominant and ticking all the boxes, so you get the same sort of feeling.”
“All the trainers thing they were good enough. They are the creme de la creme, but I think my bloke is the dominant one.”

The Chris Waller trained Preferment is the punters’ second favorite at $6.50 and the trainer admitted that the horse may not be ready for a win just yet. “We just have to work away and not try to make drastic changes,” said Waller.
“We don’t want the horse up on the bridle over 2500 metres and not conserving energy; we want the complete package,” he added.

Tied at third spot at $8.50 are the Mick Price trained Moonovermanhattan and the Danny O’Brien trained Bondeiger. Price seemed confident that his horse could outpace his rivals. “He is relaxed, sound and has a perfect temperament,” he said. “She will love it so much more at Flemington”, he added. O’Brien too sounded confident about Bondeiger. “His pedigree says that he will stay and in all his races he has finished very strongly including last week when he first stepped to the mile and a quarter,” said O’Brien.
“Until they run that mile and a half you can never be sure, but he has certainly had the right grounding.”

The Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young trained Atmosphere is staying at fifth at $11.
