The Memsie Stakes is an annual Group 1 race that takes center stage at Melbourne’s Caulfield Racecourse in Victoria, South East Australia. The race is run over a distance of 1400M and is regarded as the premier Group 1 sprint race of the Melbourne Spring Carnival. The Memsie Stakes is actually the first Group 1 race in the carnival and is today worth up to $350,000 in prize money. In its rich history, the race has managed to build a strong identity as one of the most exciting racing events and every year, the Memsie Stakes has always recorded a full house at the Caulfield Racecourse.

Atlantic Jewel was the proud winner of the Memsie Stakes last year after outclassing a field of remarkable sprint talent to cross the finish line first. Ferlax and Super Cool both had to settle for second and third respectively. The event was upgraded from a Group 2 race to a Group 1 showpiece in line with the high quality racing showcased every year. The weight-for-age race has been graced with a number of great sprinters and the perfect progression is always the Group 1 WS Cox Plate.

Some outstanding sprinters have done exemplary well to win the Memsie Stakes and the WS Cox Plate double with some of the notable ones including So You Think who took the double in 2010, Makybe Diva back in 2005, El Segundo in 2006 and the outstanding Dane Ripper back in 1998. The Memsie Stakes is always a perfect spring board for horses looking to make a name in other major events in the Melbourne Spring. Happy Trails for example finished second in the race but would later emerge victorious in the Group 2 Data Tan Chi Nam Stakes. The horse also won the Group 1 Emirates Stakes in what was a great run of form.

It’s a Dundeel went on to win the Group 1 Underwood Stakes after finishing Fourth in the Memsie Stakes and Green Moon in 2012 was on hand to win the Melbourne Cup after finishing fifth in this race back in 2012. The sheer talent on show at the Memsie Stakes is the main reason why a lot of super stars have emerged from the race and even in the future, the event is expected to remain one of the major horse races in Australia.
