The Let’s Elope Stakes is a pulsating Group 3 race that is run over a remarkable sprint distance of 1400M. The event is held every year at Melbourne’s Flemington racecourse and is exclusive to mares only. The Let’s Elope Stakes is today worth up to $200,000 in prize money and over the years, the race has continued to showcase remarkable and talented mares from different parts of Australia. The 2013 edition of the Let’s Elope Stakes was breathtaking to say the least and in the end, Commanding Jewel put up a great performance to win the title ahead of second place Catkins.

A Time For Julia had to settle for third despite a strong performance from the mare. The event was run as a listed race named the Milady Stakes before the name was changed back in 1994. The status of the race was upgraded in 2004 when the Let’s Elope Stakes became a Group 3 race and just four years later, the event was elevated again to become a Group 2 race.

Such is the quality of racing the event has showcased over the last decade and even in the future, the Let’s Elope Stakes is expected to remain one of the major events in Australian Horse racing. The race is named after the outstanding racehorse Let’s Elope and is held along the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes on the same day. The Let’s Elope Stakes is always won by talented or in-from sprinters. The best lead up race for the event is the Group 3 Cockram Stakes while mares that perform well in the race can consider running in the Group 3 How Now Stakes held a few weeks later at the Caulfield Racecourse.

Catkins last year came close to a Let’s Elope Stakes and a How Now Stakes double after running second in the Let’s Elope Stakes and later winning the How Now Stakes in breathtaking fashion. Pinker Pinker however is arguably the most outstanding mare to grace the Let’s Elope Stakes in recent years. After winning the race in 2011, the horse would then go on to claim the Group 1 Emirates Stakes, the WS Cox Stakes, and the Epsom Handicap. The Let’s Elope Stakes is a great event especially for horse racing fans looking for a show of great and raw talent.
