The Inglis Mile is an entertaining Group 3 race exclusive to four year old or above mares only. The event is held during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is run over a mile distance of 1600M. The Inglis Mile is today worth up to $150,000 in prize money and is held every year in October at Melbourne’s Moonee Valley Racecourse. The race is regarded as one of the toughest mile races of the Spring Carnival and even in yester years, the Inglis Mile has showcased remarkable competition from a number of high profile and talented horses. The 2013 edition of this event was spectacular to say the least.

The outstanding mare Catkins produced a breathtaking final finish to beat Cameo in what was a very close encounter. Lake Sententia had to settle for third despite putting up a strong performance on the day. Until last year, the Inglis Mile was actually known as the Trojan Hand Tools Stakes and will share the same date and the same stage with the Group 1 WS Cox Plate in this year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

In recent years though, the Inglis Mile has largely been graced by average horses looking to build a foundation of success before they can take on massive and highly competitive races. Some of the ideal lead-up races for this event include the Group 2 Rose of Kingston Stakes or the Group 3 How Now Stakes. As for mares who perform well in the Inglis Mile, the best progression is always the Group 1 Myer Classic.

The remarkable Zanna was the last mare to take home the Inglis Mile and the Myer Classic double back in 2003. Last year, Catkins also came close to taking the Inglis Mile and the Rose of Kingston Stakes double after running third in the latter on course towards a hard earned victory in the former. The mare also did well to finish a respectable second in the Myer Classic. The Inglis Mile is a remarkable event for talented milers in Australia and is always a great pick for horse racing fans.
