The Caulfield Guineas Prelude is a major and competitive Group 3 race that is held annually in September at the Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne, the biggest city in Victoria, South East Australia. The race is exclusive to three year old geldings and colts only and is run over a sprint distance of 1400M. The 2013 edition of the race was graciously won by Éclair Big Bang after the horse did well to outclass a number of talented sprinters including second placed El Roca. Long John came through to take third despite a strong push in the final few meters. The Caulfield Guineas Prelude is today worth up to $175,000 in prize money.

The race will feature along a number of exciting races in this year’s Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Some of the notable events that take center stage on the same day include the Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes along with other great races. The Caulfield Guineas Prelude is by far the best and most ideal build up for the Caulfield Guineas run over 1600M at the Caulfield Racecourse. The last horse to win both these races in the same year was the outstanding Helmet who achieved this remarkable success in 2011. Anacheeva was also on hand to complete the same feat a year earlier.

Although in most cases the Caulfield Guineas Prelude will normally assemble above average and handy sprinters, the event has generally been won by quality horses most of who have also done well in other races. After winning the 2013 edition of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude, Éclair Big Bang did well to run third in the Danehill Stakes. In 2010, Rekindled Interest finished fifth in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and went on to take home the AAMI Vase a few weeks later.

Manhattan Rain did well to finish a respectable second in the WS Cox Stakes after running third in the 2009 edition of the Caulfield Guineas Prelude. The future is definitely bright for the Caulfield Guineas Prelude and based on the quality racing the event has been showcasing year after year, there is no doubt the Caulfield Guineas Prelude will be a major must see for horse racing fans across the country.
