Jet Away Caulfield Cup 2013

Can Jet Away get Damien Oliver’s 5th Caulfield Cup victory this weekend?

Caulfield Cup Day is almost upon us, and the final preparations for the day’s races are being put in place and the horses being taken through their final stages of preparation, with the ten-race carnival promising to throw up plenty of excitement for spectators and punters alike.

The feature race sees a strong line up taking the barriers, as is always the case, with early favourites Hawkspur and Royal Descent attracting a lot of interest in the lead up to the race. But several horses will be in contention, with Silent Achiever buoyed by a good draw and Dandino looking good coming into the race.

One man who will be particularly fired up for this race is Damien Oliver. The jockey will be vying for his fifth Caulfield Cup victory, and with suspension keeping him out of the Cox Plate next week, the Caulfield Cup will be his biggest area of focus until the Melbourne Cup next month, where he is expected to reunite with Fiorente, whom he was down to enter as second favourite in the Cox Plate. Oliver will team up with import Jet Away (9.50) in this years Caulfield Cup. Jet Away has only had one outing in his preparation for the race, but impressed when finishing seventh in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes, being beaten by under two lengths.

Jet Away has been drawn well, and has seen his price drop over the last few days. Despite the minimal preparation, Oliver was confident going into the race:

“He is looking good. He ran really well in the Turnbull without a lot of luck and I’ve worked him since and he has worked really well. He got a little bit of interference and he tightened up on the line and that was his first-up run so you would expect him to improve and come on from that.”

Oliver will draw confidence from last year’s winner, Dunaden, who hadn’t had a run in three months before claiming victory.

The Day’s other feature races include the $220,000 Perri Cutten Caulfield Sprint, the Yellowglen Tristarc Stakes as well as the Norman Robinson Stakes, among others.

Platelet (5.50) and Chiaramonte (5.00) are the leading favourites for the 1100m Caulfield Sprint, though there are some doubts whether a 100m drop from Platelet’s preferred distance would hurt the sprinter’s chances. At 11.00, Ready To Rip could prove some value in the 12-strong field, considering a record of four wins out of five first up and a 2/3 record on this track.

The Day’s opening event, the [tooltip text=”Sunrise Cup” gravity=”n”]Click to see the Sunrise Cup field and latest odds[/tooltip], seems to be three-horse race, with Scarlet Billows (3.60), Tango’s Daughter (4.60) and Suavito (3.70) looking a class above the rest in the 11-horse field. Scarlet Billows has won in both of her starts, and could well make it three from three in this $100,000 opener. The Mick Price-trained Tango’s Daughter has also been getting a lot of support and will be looking for a second-up win after finishing in eighth in the Champagne Stakes at Moonee Valley in September.
